Best Propane Fire Pit – Reviews & Comparison of 2020

Best Propane Fire Pit – Reviews & Comparison of 2020

Last updated on September 17, 2020 By Steven Mark

The benefits of using a propane fire pit are nearly endless. Campers, RVers, and outdoorsmen alike are using best propane fire pits more than ever before and the reasons why are extremely important. First off, propane fire pits are completely smokeless. Given the fact that propane burns clean, you don’t have to worry about leaving the bonfire covered in the thick smell of smoke or even worse, getting burnt by some flaming debris.

Additionally, propane fire pits are almost always allowed in areas where campfires are banned due to dry conditions and the threat of burning wood spreading uncontrollably. That’s why I am always suggesting to my friends and clients to go with propane. Choosing the best propane fire pit all depends on how you’re going to use it. Whether you’re an, on-the-go camper, football tailgater on Sunday or just want to relax on the patio or deck with a nice book and a warm fire, there is something for everyone.

Top 10 Best Propane Fire Pit Reviews in 2020

1. Bali Propane Gas Fire Pit

Bali Propane Gas Fire Pit, best portable propane fire pitFor those of us that love spending time outdoors, the longer we can stay out the better. The folks over at Bali Outdoors have created a propane fire pit that will allow us to stay warm well into the evening. Boasting an output of 50,000 BTU, the Bali Outdoors LP Fire pit produces a ton of heat and a big flame.

Along with the 50,000 BTU output, the Bali Outdoors propane fire pit also includes lava rock which is well known to hold heat very well due to its insulation ability. Additionally, it does not hurt that the lava rock adds an aesthetic look to the propane fire pit as well.

Speaking of appearances, a unique feature of the Bali LP Fire place is the hidden control panel which gives the fire pit a seamless image. The control panel contains a push-button ignitor along with a dial that controls the amount of fuel being let into the fire. Within the fire table, there is space for a 20-pound propane tank which is great for being able to use the fireplace multiple times without the need for swapping out propane tanks

Strengths:
  • The Bali Outdoors Fire Table has an extremely elegant look to it.
  • This propane fire pit is very solidly built and you can tell is made with quality materials.
  • Easy assembly.
  • Hidden propane tank.
Weaknesses:
  • This is on the heavier side, maneuvering it has proven to be difficult.
  • Occasional issues with the built-in ignitor.

2. Outland Firebowl 883 Mega

Outland Firebowl 883 Mega, best outdoor propane fire pitHaving a reliable fire pit is an essential camping need for all-weather environments. The Outland Firebowl 883 comes in a small profile but packs a big heat punch. It’s 24” diameter is plenty to cook a quick meal on or simply sit around the fire warming up.

The Firebowl 883 has an output of 58,000 BTUs while using a 20-pound propane tank and is safe to use in areas where campfires are banned. While the Firebowl 883 does not have an automatic ignition like many other propane fire pits, it does have a stainless-steel burner which aides in its ability to produce high amounts of heat.

This propane fire pit utilizes natural lava rocks which are a natural insulator and enhance the visual appearance of the fire. It is 100% steel construction and comes with a built-in chrome dial that controls the flame height of the fire.

Strengths:
  • All steel construction.
  • Due to the Firebowl 883’s small profile, it is very easy to pack and bring along on many trips.
  • The stainless-steel inner ring is a phenomenal source of additional heat.
Weaknesses:
  • There is nowhere to hide the propane tank. It must be within 10 feet of the propane fire pit.
  • This does not come with a lid like many others.

3. Heininger 5995 Propane Fire Pit

Heininger 5995, best propane fire pit for campingWhen you are on the go, having equipment that is easy to carry is a must. The Heininger 5995 Portable Best Propane Fire Pit is one of the lightest on this list but still provides a 58,000 BTU output to keep your tailgate crew nice and toasty. Like many propane fire pits, the Heininger 5995 uses the natural insulator lava rocks to keep the fire pit flickering well into the night.

Weighing around 10 pounds, this is a fantastic choice if you’re looking to bring your fire pit with you to all types of occasions. Another popular feature of the Heininger 5995 is the base ring is made from non-conductive metals making it safe for kids and animals to be around and not have to worry about being burnt by the fire ring.

This is also a nice feature for people who would want to place the propane fire pit on many different surfaces and not have to worry about the heat affecting it. This portable fire pit comes with a 10-foot hose and regulator (included) and can attach to a typical 2-pound propane tank.

Strengths:
  • Very lightweight and easy to carry.
  • For its size, it produces a big flame.

4. Outland Firebowl 893 Deluxe

Outland Firebowl 893 Deluxe, best propane fire pit for heatFrom the same company that provides us with number three on this list, Outland is back with another best propane fire pit. Like the Outland 883, the 893 comes equipped with many of the same features but is smaller making it easier to bring to all types of occasions.

The fact that the Outland 893 is constructed with 100% steel, bringing this fire pit to tailgates, bonfires and camping outings without having to worry about denting or damaging its appearance is a nice feeling. The Outland Firebowl 893 is not a large propane fire pit and therefore has no hidden area for the propane tank to sit.

However, the Firebowl 893 comes stocked with a propane tank stabilizer ring so you can bring the fire pit to nearly any environment and not have to worry about the tank tipping over and causing a safety hazard. The 893 uses natural lava rock like many other propane fire pits to produce additional heat but if you wish, you can replace these with glass fire rocks very easily.

Strengths:
  • Durability and easy to travel with.
  • The included propane tank stabilizer ring is extremely important to keep everyone safe.
  • The Outland Firebowl 893 includes a cover and carrying kit, which is a nice addition.
Weaknesses:
  • The 19” diameter is not big enough to provide large groups with heat.
  • With the small fire surface area, I thought it would be lighter.
  • The ignition is manual which requires an external heat source.

5. Outland Firebowl 870 Premium

Outland Firebowl 870 Premium, best propane fire pit for the moneyOutland Living is making another appearance on our list, this time with their 870 Premium Portable propane fire pit model. Boasting many of the same features as the other Outland Firebowl products, including the all-steel construction, 58,000 BTU output and included carrying kit and cover, the Outland 870 can hang with the rest of their products with ease.

There is however a unique feature to this one that we liked. Typically, propane fire pits do not include an automatic ignition but the 870 Premium does. This is extremely important when camping or doing anything outside in wet conditions.

There is no need for lighters or matches, which we all know can be a hassle for so many reasons. The Premium 870 is on the smaller side in terms of burning surface area but is still easily maneuverable as it only weighs 25 lbs.

Strengths:
  • The automatic ignition switch is a game-changer.
  • The included carrying case and the cover is a nice touch.
Weaknesses:
  • The propane tank cannot be hidden, it must be within 10 feet of the fire pit.
  • The Premium 870 only comes with about 4 pounds of lava rocks, this will not last very long with a lot of usages

6. Outland Firebowl 823 Propane Gas Fire Pit

Outland Firebowl 823, best deck propane fire pitIf you’re looking for a reliable, basic and portable propane fire pit, the Outland Firebowl 823 is the answer. Outland Living has a wide variety of options and the 823 Standard is their most basic model. Utilizing about 4.5 pounds of natural lava rock, this propane fire pit output maxes out at 58,000 BTUs and this is easily controlled by the chrome valve knob located on the side of the fire pit.

Weighing in at about 20 pounds, this is the lightest fire pit we have reviewed thus far, which makes it very easy for transporting to the woods, tailgate or just in the backyard enjoying a nice evening. The 823 Firebowl comes with a 10-foot long propane hose and regulator, the only thing you need is a propane tank to get started. During testing, this small but powerful gas fire pit was able to produce flames that were over 1 foot tall.

Strengths:
  • The weight. This is the lightest model we have reviewed thus far.
  • For its size, the flames are quite large and produce a lot of heat
Weaknesses:
  • Unlike other models by Outland Living, the 823 Standard did not come with a carrying case and cover.
  • There is nowhere to hide the propane tank, it must be within 10 feet of the propane fire pit.

7. Christopher Knight Home Propane Fire Pit

Christopher Knight Home Propane Fire Pit, portable propane fire pitConsisting of a beautiful stone finish, the Christopher Knight Crawford Fire pit is a very elegant propane fire pit option and arguably one of the best propane fire pits for a deck. It is made from high-quality materials including magnesium oxide and steel legs and the finish is an aesthetic brown stone.

When it comes to the Crawford Fire pit’s heating ability, it has a maximum output of 40,000 BTUs and utilizes natural lava rock to keep things hot. You can adjust the outage on the control panel on the side of the unit as well with no hassle.

The Crawford also comes completely assembled, all you need is a propane tank and you’re ready to go. It also has an automatic ignition switch which starts the fire without the need for lighters or matches. One of my favorite features is the huge base of the Crawford propane fire pit is big enough to hold a 20-pound propane tank keeping it completely out of sight during use.

Strengths:
  • This is one of the most elegant looking propane fire pits I have reviewed.
  • The hidden propane tank is a nice feature.
  • Very big, enough for a large group to huddle around and enjoy.
  • The fact that it comes fully assembled is very nice.
Weaknesses:
  • 40,000 BTU max output is lower than most models out there.
  • It is very heavy to maneuver.

8. Endless Summer Propane Gas Fire Pit

Endless Summer Propane Gas Fire Pit, diy propane fire pitEndless Summer is known for their propane products, primarily their tanks which can be found all over the world. But this time around, they released a propane fire pit that is a quality design and has some unique features. This large fire pit is big enough to hide a 20-pound propane tank inside of its solid steel side panels and features a safety valve and automatic ignition switch which makes starting the Endless Summer a breeze.

I think the most unique feature of this best propane fire pit is that it uses blue fire glass instead of lava rock to insulate and hold heat from the flame. The blue fire glass also provides a beautiful flame appearance and the ability for the flame to change color based on the unique features of each piece of fire glass. This square-shaped propane fire pit would look great on a deck or patio.

Strengths:
  • The blue fire glass is unique and gives it a stunning visual.
  • The propane tank compartment is a nice touch, keep it completely concealed.
  • Large surface area for heat to be produced.
Weaknesses:
  • Assembly was proven to be quite difficult
  • It is very heavy at nearly 70 pounds
  • 30,000 BTU max output is quite low compared to Others.

9. Outland Firebowl 863 Cypress

Outland Firebowl 863, best Propane Fire PitOutdoor Living has done it again but this time, with a new and unique technology that myself and many folks seem to love. The 863 Cypress Outdoor fire pit combines the reliability and quality construction we’ve come to expect from Outland Living with a new and revolutionary design.

With its easy maneuverability and quality construction, the Cypress 863 is a quality option for campers and outdoorsman alike. With its 58,000 BTU maximum output, the Cypress 863 also includes a Helios burner, which is not standard among Outland Living products and is the first propane fire pit we have reviewed with such technology.

The Helios burner is said to create a more natural and fuller looking flame than standard burners and I tend to agree. The flame is beautiful, and the size is easily controlled by the chrome valve knob near the base of the fire pit.

Strengths:
  • The Helios Burner is very nice and its effect on the flame is noticeable.
  • The included carrying bag and cover is a big plus.
  • Easy assembly and lightweight.
Weaknesses:
  • There is nowhere to conceal the propane tank.

10. Camp Chef Redwood Pro

Camp Chef Redwood Pro, how to choose the best propane fire pitComing in at number 10 on our list is the Camp Chef Redwood Pro. This propane fire pit comes with a massive 12 pounds of natural lava rock and is the first propane fire pit to include roasting sticks with it in the box. It also includes an automatic ignition switch which we know now is a great feature in a pro fire pit.

When it comes to safety the Redwood Pro has a safety shut off valve conveniently located right near the base for easy adjustments and easy shut off in case of emergency. Another good feature of this propane fire pit is the heavy gauge steel fire ring around the top and the base is nickel coated steel which stays cool even when the fire is roaring.

Strengths:
  • 12 pounds of included lava rock is double the next most on this list.
  • The safety shut off valve is in a very convenient and safe space.
Weaknesses:
  • The diameter of the flame area is barely over a foot in diameter, making it the smallest surface area we’ve seen thus far.
  • The propane tank cannot be concealed, and the included hose is only 5 feet long, which requires the propane tank to be within 5 feet of the propane fire pit.

How I Chose My Best Propane Fire Pit

Given the wide variety of available propane fire pits on the market, selecting the right one can be a bit difficult. For me, it all came down to what I was going to use it for the most. I am an outdoorsman that loves camping and being able to move around with my gear easily is one of the most important things. Therefore, I went with something lighter and smaller, but you must remember that everyone has different uses for their propane fire pit.

If you are a fan of sitting on the deck or patio with a nice fire burning and do not have plans to use it at tailgating parties or bring it on the RV, then something stronger and more elegant looking may be the best choice. These usually include the concealed propane tank compartment and are bigger so you can enjoy the fire pit with more people.

I also took a hard look at safety and ignition types when selecting the best propane fire pit for me. As an avid camper, needing to rely on matches or a lighter to start a fire is not always possible. If I am going to be using this in the elements of nature, then I find an automatic ignition fire pit. If the fire pit will be used primarily at home, then this wouldn’t be as important to me.

Final Verdict

There you have it, folks, out of all the propane fire pits we reviewed, those are the best and most popular options we found! Each one has unique differences and benefits to fit all types of outdoorsmen that are in the market for a propane fire pit. Remember the benefits of propane and stay safe out there, thanks for reading!
